Old Time Radio Shows Are Exciting With Captain Midnight
Young kids of the 1940s war decade did not have to search for long for a hero you know. Captain Midnight provided them with the action of a military aviator who took on the bad guys.
Starting on October 17, 1939 the Captain Midnight Old Time Radio Shows aired in markets where its sponsor, the Skelly Oil Company, had major customers. The adventurous show was very appealing to children of all ages, and especially popular in the southern states of America.
Bill Bouchey and Shirley Bell featured in the lead roles of Captain Midnight. Later the voice of Captain Midnight would be taken over by Ed Prentiss and Paul Barnes.
The basic premise of the show centered around the hero himself, Captain Midnight. The premise of the show is that he used to be a brilliant pilot from World War I and how he has kept everyone oblivious to his real identity, which even his COs were completely unaware of. His nickname came from a daring mission where he returned at midnight unscathed.
Children across the US found Captain Midnight to be a very appealing show, with the saving of others, bringing justice and taking apart evil being very enjoyable for kids, so he was one of the earliest action heroes for kids in the early days of broadcasting. Kids found his sidekicks Chuck Ramsey and Patsy Donovan very interesting to listen to as well.
As the Old Time Radio Shows continued it changed hands and was sponsored by Ovaltine and was broadcast more widely. As the years went by and the United States entered World War II, Captain Midnight stayed in line with the times. Soon enough, his encounters would bring him up against the Japanese and the Nazis.
All over the country, children were joining the Captain Midnight Flight Patrol, a fan club that sent children a junior pilot application card and a bronze medal to commemorate their membership. The show's hidden messages were frequent, and so the pilot's ID card and the medal acted as a decoder of sorts, adding a further level of enjoyment and excitement that kids would enjoy when listening to the show, to figure out what any hidden messages meant.
Every weekday brought another action-packed show to enjoy and so it was an extremely popular action-packed show. Captain Midnight brought the excitement of battle combat to kids, who then would really appreciate the sound effects from the show.
As children listened they were transported into machine gun battles and heroic dives through the air. The excitement of the whole listening experience made for a very appealing show indeed.
Millions of children joined the Flight Patrol. The success of Captain Midnight is surely tied to the events of the day when war and aviation were on the forefront of American culture.
